Liberating Community-based Research: Rescuing Gramsci’s Legacy of Organic Intellectuals

This article aims to provoke a discussion around conceiving community members as community-based research facilitators and leaders of their own process change. It argues this is possible by rescuing Gramsci’s legacy organic intellectuals that present in literature, particularly under the participatory rubric. However, perspective has been overshadowed strong emphasis on (CBR) collaborative approach rather than people’s for knowledge production leads social transformation. Furthermore, such view fruitful within an adult education movement learning framework. In sense, movements provide environment facilitates critical consciousness formation which communities academics learn better engage partnership community-led context, CBR still approach, but one led primarily intellectuals.
